Book Journeys – Arabia

Arabia…

What do you think of?

Before reading The Esther Paradigm by Sarah Monzon, I could only pull images from movies I’d seen (Hildago being one of my favorites).  Sarah’s beautiful novel reintroduces me to a world and culture quite different than my own, so let’s learn a little more about this landscape, beautiful in its own way.

Sarah used Arabia as her canvas for painting her beautiful story about Karim and Hannah, two people from two cultures and faiths, who allow love to, not only save Karim’s people, but also bind their two hearts together.

Arabia is a peninsula which is framed in by the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, the Persian Gulf, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. So…three sides of it meet water, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s like Hawaii. Arabia is known for it’s dry, dessert climate, but usually boasts a pleasant spring and autumn (my two favorite seasons). Mountain ranges run throughout it with an elevation as high as 9000 feet in some places. The combination of the rugged terrain and climate make for a perfect setting for the nomadic life Sarah’s describes.

In so many of the photos, the sands appear almost like ocean waves on a vast golden horizon. The wind shifts the sands, changing the scenery with a sky that modulates from amethyst mountains, copper skies, jagged peaks, golden sands, and aqua seas. Doesn’t sound so bad, does it? Though, from what I understand, it’s not for the faint of heart or the lover-of-cold-weather or rain 😉

Sarah recreates this unpredictable and vast landscape for us through her novel The Esther Paradigm. The danger, beauty, heat, and nomadic life are portrayed to the point where I could almost feel the wind whipping around the tents. You can read my full review HERE.

Have you ever watched a movie that featured Arabia? What would you like to see if you could go to such a place?

Who? Alex Murdoch

Where can we find this dreamboat? Charming the Troublemaker by yours truly.

Personality summary: Alex Murdoch! The guy surprised me from the very beginning! His flirty front covers a sweet heart that’s been wounded by some deep struggles of life. He was such a fun character to write because, really, I never knew what he was going to say. Why did I fall in love with Alex? Well, he already had a hero’s heart, he just needed someone to believe in him 🙂 A lot of times, in life, we see a very crinkled reflection of ourselves through the criticism or mistreatment of others, when that ONE person with clear vision can pinpoint the person we are on the inside and bring him/her to the forefront. Alex’s tender heart, charm, and humor had always been there, but Rainey (with some Holy Spirit inspiration) was able to make him shine up his armor for the rest of the world to see 🙂

Marilyn
Let’s not forget the OTHER leading lady in this story…Did I hear you say underoos?

What makes us swoon? A HUGE thank you to my Dream Team for sharing what YOU love about #AdorkableAlex!

There are SO many good things to say about this amazing man, so I had to limit the responses I shared.

Rachel M.: What I adored about him was his sweet self-control. Oh there was some steamy scenes but because he wanted to honor her and God, he kept all things pure. AND that is really really romantic.

Angi: His sense of humor, how he was always trying to protect Rainey and Sarah. LOVED his interaction with Sarah. His willingness to learn.

Buffy: His kindness & compassion are a big draw. Plus he knows about My Little Ponies.

Instagram
Pinterest

Rebecca: At his core, he was a very protective, loyal, loving and winsome character!

Courtney: He hides a VERY humble heart behind his flirtatious front, so when he finally lets himself be vulnerable…. SWOON. This vulnerability stretches into his interaction with little Sarah, which makes him even sweeter. He’s ever the gentleman when with Rainey (who could be described as a sassy level 5 kisser herself, HA!). AND, he unabashedly talks about period dramas and Hallmark movies.

Carrie: Is ‘underoos’ an acceptable answer?  (You really have to read the book now right?) Pam and Katie agree with this statement…STRIPED Underoos to be specific!

Andi: His kissing ability . . . the closet scene.

Which brings me to….

Kissing level of such swooniness:  There is NO doubt in anyone’s mind (especially Rainey’s) that Alex is a solid 5 on this scale! His tenderness is breathtaking. And..this is funny, but I love how he talks throughout kisses. And don’t get me started on the storage closet! #ClosetKisses

Basic hero type: He is a Henley!   A combo of Henry and Mr. Knightley. His genuineness, friendship, and humor fit both of them. His care of his own family and Rainey’s reminds us of Knightley.

How can I meet this swoony mister?

When Dr. Alex Murdock is demoted to a university in rural Virginia, the last thing he expects to find is a future. But country charm never looked as good as it did on Rainey Mitchell.

CharmingtheTroublemaker 500x750Rainey Mitchell does not need a high-class flirt in her wounded world, but trouble and temptation wafts off the new professor as strong as his sandalwood-scented cologne. When circumstances thrust them together to save her tutoring clinic, can the troublemaker find the hero inside and encourage the reticent Rainey to open her heart again?

“Rainey Mitchell is doing just fine. She has a great job helping children in need, her family is around her, she is mother to a fabulous little girl, and is getting over the betrayal of her ex-husband. Dr. Alex Murdock is not doing so well, as he is forced to work at a rural university, his life is full of secrets surrounding his family, and he has to start over in a new town. Luckily, Rainey, the daughter of his landlord, is there to get him settled. Rainey just wants to stay away from the new professor, who has the same charm as her ex. Unfortunately, they seem to need each other. Rainey needs his grant-writing ability to save her program, and Alex is terrible at the lecturing at which Rainey excels. The two must work together to fulfill their goals, but will they be able to do it? Rainey’s insecurities and Alex’s obsession with protecting his family could be their undoing. A well-written love story filled with suspense, mystery, and a loving family.” ~ Library Journal Review

Hugh is relaxing before bed. (Gretchen? Have we arrived yet? We've been a little preoccupied....)
Ok…Ok…I know this is not Josh Tyler…But it’s Hugh Jackman. And he is Australian and look at that smile!

Personality summary: Josh Tyler is a man whose past has brought gravity to her personality but depth to his faith. As a musician in a band that performs all over the world, he’s used to being in the limelight but has also learned, due to painful circumstances, to guard his privacy. He wears a smile more readily than a frown…unless the heroine, Paige, is involved, but don’t worry – her proclivity for being unintentionally ridiculous turns Josh’s frown around. With a desire to do what is right, a love for family, music, and Jesus, he oozes a confidence which is seen best in his compassion with others.

What makes us swoon?

Blue Mountains, australia.

AUSTRALIAN!! (Everyone agrees that this is the top swoony feature 😉)

He’s a musician (guitar)

He can sing

He loves his family.

Kind.

Great smile (this is a very swoony one for me. Smiles!! Sigh)

He’s gentle when it’s needed most.

Seriously, this guy is pretty adorable. Funny, confident, flirty…AND he loves Jesus!!!!!!

Unforgettable! Up there in the swoony charts. A solid 4.

Basic hero type: Josh can brood with the best of them but underneath is a very caring heart. I think brooding might not be his typical trait, so I’m placing him in the Wentworth (for grudge holding) with a dash of Knightly underneath. What do you think?

Book Journeys – Roanoke

d87db-the2blady2band2bthe2blionheartI loved getting to return to my home state in Joanne Bischof’s beautiful novel, The Lady and The Lionheart. In Bischof’s excellent story of romance and redemption, the characters remain in the small city of Roanoke, Virginia for most of the book.

Roanoke is a beautiful little city located in the Roanoke Valley in the southwestern part of the state. In fact, a lot of people I’ve met from the northern part of Virginia think that Virginia ends at Roanoke 😉 (but thankfully Virginia Tech has put us a little more southerly on the map)

First named Big Lick (seriously) in 1852 for a large outcropping of salt marshes near the Roanoke River, the name was changed to Roanoke in 1882 (whew…)

The name Roanoke comes from the Algonquian word for ‘shell’ which was used as currency – and the native Americans called the large river nearby, Roanoke, so the town took on the name.

Smith Mountain Lake, VA (prints available here: http://www.smith-mountain-lake-visitor-center.com/prints/prints_smith_mountain_lake_01.htm)
Pinterest

As railroads became more common, Roanoke became an important hub for people to get from the more metropolitan northeast to the growing west.

Roanoke is a valley framed in by mountains. It’s actually a beautiful place to behold from the Blue Ridge Parkway that gives spectacular vistas of the city. The Appalachian Trail runs through the northern part of Roanoke and the beautiful Smith Mountain Lake is to the southeast (My dad LOVES Smith Mountain Lake!! Great catfish up there).

Visit one of these unbelievably odd yet fun museums to get a different take on Virginia’s history.
Pinterest

Although small, because of its unique location it’s become an eclectic arts and sciences community. Center in the Square brings this theory to view with a seven-story cultural center in the middle of downtown. The city also has some wonderful museums for history, science, music, and many other things. Oh, and for those with more ‘unique’ interests, there is even the Roanoke Pinball Museum.

For nature lovers, there is opportunity to go below or above. Dixie and Luray Caverns take you on a below-ground tour, but then you can drive to new heights on the lovely Blue Ridge Parkway.

Roanoke Mountain, off the Blue Ridge Parkway...I dream about talking long walks down roads like this...talking to Jesus as I walk! facebook.com/loveswish
Pinterest

One of my favorite places to visit near Roanoke is Explore Park. There’s SOOOOO much to do there, but I love the historical aspect of the Park. In fact, I have an entire scene devoted to Explore Park in a future book 😊  http://explorepark.org/375/Historical-Area

There are too many things to list to do in this beautiful part of the world, but Clifton Forge (also mentioned in The Lady and the Lionheart) isn’t too far away either. It’s part of the Alleghany Highlands and would have been a much more rural town when Charlie and Ella visited.

So there you have it. A little bit about Roanoke, Va. Subtract about a century, add a circus, and you could step into the world of the amazing novel, The Lady and the Lionheart.

Have you ever been to Roanoke? Would you like to go?

The Lady and the Lionheart by Joanne Bischof

About the Book

Two worlds collide when the circus comes to Victorian-era Virginia.

Raised amid the fame and mystique of the Big Top, Charlie Lionheart holds the audience in the palm of his hand. But while his act captivates thousands, it’s away from the spotlight where his true heart lies. Here he humbly cares for his pride of lions as if they were his brothers, a skill of bravery and strength that has prepared him for his most challenging feat yet—freeing an orphaned infant from the dark bondage of a sideshow. A trade so costly, it requires his life in exchange for hers, leaving him tarnished by the price of that choice.

As the circus tents are raised on the outskirts of Roanoke, country nurse Ella Beckley arrives to tend to this ill Gypsy girl. All under the watchful eye of a guardian who not only bears a striking resemblance to the child, but who protects the baby with a love that wraps around Ella’s own tragic past, awakening a hope that goodness may yet reign. When their forbidden friendship deepens, Charlie dares to ask for her heart, bringing her behind the curtain of his secret world to reveal the sacrifice that gave hope to one little girl—boldly showing Ella that while her tattered faith is deeply scarred, the only marks that need be permanent are his own.

My Thoughts

LATL 4So…I’d heard nothing but praise, praise and more praise for Joanne Bischof’s novel, The Lady and the Lionheart, which meant I HAD to read it, of course. Well, the hype is certainly well-founded and I’ll tell you why I thought so in just a minute.

First, about the book:

From the first paragraph, this story drew me in with its eloquent writing. Vivid detail, word pictures, and beautiful phrasing enticed me further…and then I met Charlie. I love quirky, and Joanne performed the task of creating a lovable and realistic character raised in a very different world. But…more about Charlie in a little bit.

Spiritual truths in fiction can be a tricky balance beam to tread for an author, but Joanne does it beautifully in both of the main characters’ lives. Both are scarred. One by a ruthless act of a selfish man and the other by a forced choice to save the lives of another. These ‘scars’ seamlessly display a beautiful reminder that even in our brokenness we are remarkably beloved.

Aviary Photo_131303863941749795.pngBetween Joanne’s descriptive writing style, the intricate historical detail of a lesser known ‘world’, and the curious and uncertain introduction to romance between Charlie and Ella, this book called for just ONE. MORE. PAGE. There’s something indefinably sweet about it. Maybe it’s because we all want to know we’re loved despite our internal or external scars. Maybe’s it’s because we see two kind and tenderhearted people trying to navigate the unexpected and hurtful wounds of the world to uncover true love. Or Maybe it’s because Charlie Lionheart.

Now I understand why Carrie Schmidt has a book crush on Charlie. He is 1/3 brooding, 1/3 adorkable, and 1/3 exquisitely tender, which makes him 100% top book crush material.

In short, this story was a magical journey of two broken people learning how God mends our shattered lives in sometimes the most unexpected of ways…and about how we are loved far beyond our brokenness.

A beautiful and endearing romance from a beautiful and talented writer.

Cover Reveal – Charming the Troublemaker

Okay, so…this sequel to A Twist of Faith has been a LOOOOONGGG time coming, but I absolutely love the story.

A little history – I started this novel as a LOOSE retelling of Elizabeth Gaskell’s novel North & South , but the characters took this story in a little different direction, though I think you might see some similar themes, but you ‘have to look hard’ (Die-hard N&S fans will get that reference).

For one, Alex Murdock took over…and I fell in love with him. He was SO. MUCH. FUN to write!! He’s not your typical hero, a flirt who’s down on his luck, but he was just waayyyy too adorkable to leave untapped. Thus, the creation of the hashtag #AdorkableAlex.

I hope to share a few sneak peeks next week, but for not let me tell you a little about Charming the Troublemaker before the great unveiling (and I see you! Don’t skim to the bottom first. You need to enjoy the journey)

About the Book

Rainey Mitchell does not need a high-class flirt in her wounded world, but trouble and temptation wafts off the new professor as strong as his sandalwood-scented cologne.

When circumstances thrust them together to save her tutoring clinic, can the troublemaker find the hero inside and encourage the reticent Rainey to open her heart again?

Songspiration – Charming the Troublemaker Part 1

Songspiration

Now, you may be wondering what that word means. Well, Songspiration means songs that have inspired characters, story lines, and other aspects related to writing a book.

Today I am sharing the Songspiration for the hero in my upcoming release, Charming the Troublemaker. Alex Murdock is a swoony hero – a flirt…and #adorkable but he’s also quite the troublemaker…And maybe that has a little bit to do with being a flirt. 😉 I can’t wait for you to meet him. Get a peek inside his character in the video below.

Book Journeys – Reality TV Style

I just finished fellow Alleycat and dear friend, Krista Phillips’s upcoming novel The Engagement Plot and people…

It was SO MUCH FUN!!!

513Iia8V52L.jpg

I’ll let you read the blurb HERE – but today on Book Journeys we’re going to travel to various places that the characters visit in the book.

If you do not know, it’s a story about two reality TV stars whose onscreen relationship took a pretty nasty turn and now they’re both trying to pick up the pieces of their very public explosion.  I don’t want to give too much of it away, but you need to know three things:

  1. Krista might deny it, but she writes some super duper kisses
  2. The coffee scene. I mean, seriously. You’ll know it when you get there. LOVED IT!
  3. Will has toes of steel.

Our first stop on this book journey is Embarrass, Minnesota

Embarrass, Minnesota - 15 Most Unfortunate Town Names (funny town names, funny city names, weird town names, strange town names, bizarre town names) - ODDEE
Pinterest

Embarrass, known lovingly as The Cold Spot, got it’s name from the river’s notorious ability to confound/confuse explorers/travelers who were trying to navigate their way through its waters. Early explorers were French, and since the French word for confound/confuse/complicate is similar to ‘embarrass’, the name stuck.

Finnish Dovetail House circa 1900 Embarrass, Minnesota
Pinterest

A small mining town, Embarrass is known for its Finnish-American Homestead Tours, Ice Candle festivities, small town aura, and…ice fishing (which you read about in the book 😊) Our heroine, Hanna, grew up and lives here.

Which is VERY different than the two homes of hero William Preston.

William works as a high-class CEO in Nashville. Now we’ve looked a little at old Nashville last time with Tamara Alexander’s book, but today we’re going to see a few pics of downtown Nashville. “Music City U.S.A” is the largest city in Tennessee and features various ‘parts’ of the city for various tastes 😊

Music Row in Nashville, Tennessee (aka Music City) I can't wait till October and I get to see and experience this!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so exited.

The Central business district, where our hero Will works, is on the northern side of the city and features Tennessee Bicentennial Mall. The cityscape really is pretty (as far as cities go 😉)

Because of its musical history, Nashville is home to some of the top recording studios in the nation. It also boasts from great history, from Belle Meade Mansion to the Parthenon, there’s PLENTY to see and experience. And DO NOT forget Music Row!!! (such a colorful place)

21074264_10214025730218015_1511006592_n.jpgKrista’s characters also spend time in the NY/NJ area where Will’s parents live. I LOVED meeting them and I’m sure Krista has a much better picture of their house in mind. But isn’t it just BEAUTIFUL!!!

As November draws closer, I’ll have my review for The Engagement Plot featured, but for now, I just want to introduce you to Krista’s story world AND…of course, introduce her swoony hero on Saturday.

Sweetbriar Cottage by Denise Hunter

61kabzeSXfL._SX326_BO1,204,203,200_I’m an avid Denise Hunter fan with my very favorite book of hers being The Convenient Groom, but in all honesty, almost every book I’ve read by this author has been such a fun, romantic read. What I’ve come to expect in a Denise Hunter novel is solid characters, a sprinkle of humor, a dash of adventure, a peppering of faith, and a good slathering of romance.

So when Denise’s newest book, Sweetbriar Cottage, also added my Blue Ridge Mountains to the list…well, seriously, how could I NOT want to read this book? With Denise’s usual expertise of charming and bittersweet, she also has a knack for showing us God’s unfailing love in the way the hero ends up loving the heroine. (This is one of my favorite tropes, btw)

We get a beautiful picture of this ‘love story’ through the relationship of Josephine and Noah, a couple who used to be married, thought they filed for divorce, and then discover they’re NOT divorced after all.

SweetbriarcottageIn the dazzling way known as Denise-Hunter-writing, we delve into a novel of what love really looks like when hurts are deep and forgiveness is hard. It’s her signature. A hero who shows God’s love in a tangible way to a broken, insecure, and wounded heroine. It’s one of the reasons I love her books so much. Some of the other reasons are…super romance, wonderful kisses, sweet storytelling, and excellent descriptions.

If you’re a fan of stories with a deeper thread of redemption, two people trapped in a cabin during a snowstorm, and a God who mends broken things with his unfathomable love, you’ll probably enjoy Sweetbriar Cottage.

A delightfully sweet read with a poignant core about the healing power of love.
