It’s Release Day! Finding Ever After

Once Upon a Time…

It was RELEASE DAY for the fairytale-ish collection Finding Ever After.

It ALSO happened to be Valentine’s Day 😉 Nice combo, if you ask me.

YES! Today’s the day that readers get to step into four different stories all bound together by a fairytale book. It has been such an honor and delight to get to work together with three friends and authors to develop this collection for you all and I’m SO PLEASED you get the chance to enjoy the ‘magic’ of romance through these stories.

You can learn more about the series HERE

Today, I’m going to give you a little tour into the real places you’ll glimpse in my novella, Between Stairs and Stardust. It’s such fun to introduce you to James and Stella, an unlikely pair with kindred hearts.

Between Stairs and Stardust takes place in Asheville, NC – mostly at the grand Biltmore estate or in my fictional estate of Cravewood. Because I am a devoted admirer of Biltmore, I loved including it into this sweet story AND because it’s a REAL place, I can show you a few of the places Stella and/or James visit.

First, is the meeting place: The lagoon (pond) at Biltmore. Here’s a little video so you can see 😊 (taken a few days ago 😉)

51650057_2300604516849897_8522067498768531456_n

There’s also the walled-garden. Here you can see the conservatory on one side of the walled garden and just near it is the gardener’s cottage – both part of a rather lovely (and snowy) scene.

Also as part of that scene is the tea house with a view of the lovely Blue Ridge Mountains. Mr. Vanderbilt owned land all the way from the house to those mountains. The tea house is situated on the far side of a long terrace outside the house’s library. Here’s a video of that too. (the wind gets crazy, so bear with me).

There are so many wonderful places to see and explore at Biltmore and because of all the fun research I’ve gotten to do there, I’ve LOVED creating my own two fictional estates. Cravenwood, which you learn about in Between Stairs and Stardust, but also an upcoming estate in the Blue Ridge Mountains known as Glastor Estate.

Here are a few more views to enjoy!

I hope you’ll take the time to check out this wonderful collection – 4 stories for only $4.99!!!

AND, if you want to check out my writing style before you commit, my novella, Second Impressions is on sale for only .99 from Feb 15-16! It’s a great opportunity to take a trip to Bath, England where romance brews between a straight-and-narrow hotel owner and a color-outside-the-lines Austenite. Homicidal bonnets may come into play.

Cover Reveal and Giveway – Jane by the Book

About the Book

Four years ago, Jane Warwick escaped the shame and heartbreak of being jilted at the altar by becoming a housekeeper at the secluded Inn at Simeon Ridge. Predictable and quiet, the inn helps Jane find a place to heal and celebrates her strengths, where she is promoted to head housekeeper. But an unexpected visit to Bath, England, upsets Jane’s plans and sends her out of her comfort zone, directly into the harrowing path of historical detective author, Titus Stewart. The only plans Titus sticks to are family holidays and the ones that send him careening into his story worlds, but when an uptight and nervous innkeeper stumbles into his life – and his latest novel – nonfiction begins to take on a much more interesting gleam.

As the unlikely pair delve into the mystery behind a one-hundred-and-fifty-year-old letter, will they both uncover a romance that stands the test of time?

Book Birthday – The Thorn Keeper

The Thorn KeeperTwo years ago, this story arrived in print! It’s my favorite published historical I’ve written (although I really love them all). Something about this rebel turned heroine reminds me that there is no one too far gone, no heart too entrenched in sin, that God cannot capture!

Unforgiveness leads to shame and despair but Forgiveness leads to healing and hope.

A fallen woman and a WWI doctor discover that the heart can always remember what the mind may forget and that God never forgets his own.

About the Book

28575902_10215694171488004_9111685456091054486_n.jpgSeptember 1916 – Derbyshire, England

With her newfound faith, Catherine Dougall hopes to take the remnants of her threadbare life and make something beautiful, even if society shuns every choice she makes.

Dr. David Ross must save his war hospital from ruin, but when his notorious aunt makes an offer he can’t refuse, he must choose between his surprising affection for a reformed flirt or his dreams.

From the beautiful Derbyshire countryside to the trenches of World War One, Catherine and David must learn to trust in a God who never forgets his children and fashions beauty out of the most broken things.

Inspiration

Here is a little swoon worthy inspiration for The Thorn Keeper

Sneak Peek from The Thorn Keeper

1“Catherine! Wait, please.” She turned at the sound of her given name, which David rarely used in front of her. She stopped halfway down the hallway, almost to the patients’ rooms. He approached her, watching her face for any anger or softening, but she remained as emotionless as a Grecian statue. “Yes, Dr. Ross?” Her formal address kept a distance between them. He frowned in response. She used Michael’s Christian name, but not his?

“What happened earlier…” He stepped closer, lowering his voice from possible eavesdroppers. “I wanted to apologize for my sister’s carelessness. It was inexcusable.”

She kept her gaze on him, ushering a sobering silence, leaving him unbalanced, uncertain, and completely intrigued. “You don’t have to apologize for her. I expected her reaction.” “There is no excuse for it.” David stepped closer, almost reaching out to touch her arm. He shoved his hands into his pockets. “Regardless of your past choices and mistakes, her behavior was wrong…and surprising.”

Catherine released a ruthless chuckle. “Surprising? No, her response isn’t surprising at all. It’s exactly how I expect society to respond to someone like me. I created my reputation and must live with the consequences.” Her gaze searched his again. “Your response, however, is the surprising one.”

3

She turned to continue her walk, words lingering in the air, but he stopped her with a gentle tug to turn her to face him. “What do you mean? Have I done something to offend you?” “You truly have no idea?” Her smile spread wide, sweet and beautiful, disarming him as much as her statement. Her question hushed to a whisper. “Dr. Ross, you know my secrets and my reputation. In fact, you were the first person who learned of my…situation.” “But how is that surprising?”

Her expression gentled at his apparent ignorance, giving him another glimpse at her tenderness. “To all accounts I should be an outcast, ignored and reduced to the level of the meanest servant. Your kindness, your patience, and especially your offer of friendship, to someone like me…from someone like you? Of course, it’s surprising.”

“I value your friendship. Besides, you don’t deserve to suffer forever from the choices you’ve made.” She shook her head. “You see, that’s exactly it. You’re not responding as your station demands. You’re so good, certain. You’re like a rock in a storm. Steadfast.” She chuckled and dropped her head, sending a hint of lavender in his direction. “I’ve never understood that word before meeting you.” The look she gave him humbled and shocked him with alarming intensity. It was an expression of unadulterated admiration, turning his insides to mush. He stepped closer into the scent of lavender, toward the magnetizing essence surrounding her, calling his heart.

He stumbled through a reply. “I…I’ve failed in many ways to do what’s right, but this I know. You are much more than what society deems. God has a precious plan for your future.” Tenderness softened his voice, his attention drawn to those dazzling eyes. “Something beautiful, even—”

2A scream broke into their conversation. A loud crash followed from the hospital room, sending David into motion. Everyone remained where they’d been before except the other two nurses cowering in a corner… And for Mr. Clayton. Heat drained from David’s face. Clayton stood in the middle of the room, with the assistance of a crutch. His wild-eyes searched the room as if for unseen enemies, and he clenched a scalpel in his fist. “I won’t be prisoner to no Fritz. Let me outta here or I’ll kill the lot of you.”

Reviews

What people have been saying about The Thorn Keeper over the last two years…

Although these are fictional characters and situations, there were many times I could actually sense the Holy Spirit’s presence as part of their story as it unfolded. Very moving and authentic portrayals in this book of God’s grace, his overwhelming love, and his ability to bring beauty out of ashes. – Michelle Lunsford (Goodreads)

I loved seeing Catherine’s continued transformation and the growth of her relationship with Christ… In fact, I love inspirational fiction because it is one of the ways I am able to grow in my own relationship with Our Lord. – Lindsay Trapp (Goodreads)

Pepper takes difficult situations…and deals with the gritty reality of them. Though, it’s not all suffering and turmoil through the whole course of the book. Pepper also writes about the beauty in these difficult situations as her characters learn about God’s grace, forgiveness, and healing. – Rachael at Rachael’s Reads

A story of God’s love and His relationship with us. A story of forgiveness and redemption, compassion and service, The Thorn Keeper deserves a place in your heart and on your shelves. – Annie at Just Commonly

Swoony Saturdays – Reese Mitchell

Welcome! Welcome!

Swoony Saturdays are your opportunity to be introduced to a book hero who fits high quality hero characteristics. (okay, so he just makes us weak in the knees for all kinds of reasons, but you get the point)

The photos involved are chosen as the most representative of the heroes featured, so IF they look like someone you’ve seen before, that’s almost entirely accidental.

Who? Reese Mitchell

Where can we find this dreamboat? A Twist of Faith by Pepper Basham (released April, 2016)

Personality summary: Reese is a good-hearted country boy who has been deeply wounded in the past and is now raising his two kids on his own. His mildly gruff exterior houses a quick mind, warm sense of humor, tender-heart, and forthrightness. Despite his wounds and his own avoidance of romance, he bears the spirit of a nurturer, and Dr. Adelina Roseland proves a woman in need of a patient pursuit. A big Appalachian family invades his life and holds him close with their idiosyncrasies and love, which is another aspect that not only helps Reese seek a relationship with the “citified” loner, but it is also a catalyst for keeping his opinions balanced when everything falls apart. He’s faithful—and when his focus is set on Dee, well, he’ll do about anything to sweep her off her feet and right into his arms.

What makes us swoon?A Twist fo Faith

Fire lighting proficiency (if you’ve read the book, you understand. Thank you, Beth Erin!)

He’s a great daddy. Loves his kids. And let’s face it! Guys with their little girls or babies? Exponential swoon factor!!

Smart – always a bonus

Willing to sacrifice his pride to give his lady-love a swoony moment

As mentioned by ladies from my Street Team:

Sexy mountain man accent

Sexy mountain man muscles

Sexy mountain man sense of humor

He takes care of his family

He’s the right amount of ornery and flirty

Hugh Jackman - as Reese Mitchell:
Pinterest

Kissing level of such swooniness: Reese is a solid #4 kisser, a smoldering sort of fire that causes the happy recipient to inwardly glow for hours later.

Basic hero type: Reese has been a tough one to place on the ‘hero’ scale. He’s a solid mix between Knightley, Darcy, Wentworth…and even Mr. Tilney. He can brood, when brooding is warranted, but for the most part he’s easy going. He has a fierce protectiveness about him and dedication to his family, but a quick sense of humor too. He’s hardworking, but not to the neglect of his family…or a few flirty moments.

How can I meet this swoony mister? A Twist of Faith is available on Amazon, B&N,  and Christian Book Distributors.

Book Journeys – London

In anticipation of my upcoming release, Just the Way You Are, I’m going to take you on my characters’ journeys through different settings in the book.

Our first stop is London….Book Journeys - London

My heroine, Eisley Barrett, arrives in Heathrow International Airport and is swept off her homicidal heels by the suspicious, reformed rogue, Wes Harrison. Her quaint Appalachian world has her daydreaming about England and her wounded heart keeps her from seeing God’s possibilities for her life.

Before traveling to the beautiful midlands of Derbyshire, Eisley is taken on a whirlwind tour of London by Wes’ parents, Daniel and Eleanor Harrison. So…what does she see?

Book Journeys – Bath UK Part 2

england2016bath
my son ,”Jane”, me, and my hubby

On March 6, my first novella is released in a fun compilation entitled Love at First Laugh. Seriously, people, it’s 8 stories, to tickle your funny bones and tie up your heartstrings, for only .99!! WOW!

You certainly want to purchase those now. Right here 🙂

But in the celebration of my novella, Second Impressions, I’ve been taking you on a journey of the setting for the story. Bath, UK. A beautiful city that ooz13781894_10210072080859252_4424339124400341310_nes history from the mortar between the stones to the pavement in the streets. Part 1 is here

Now, in my novella, my heroine is in search of the epic Jane Austen experience – The Jane Austen Festival…some of the time in the story she’s in full regency apparel :0)

In the previous post, I talked about Bath, in general, and the ballro
oms. In this post, I’m going to show you two other important points of interest in Bath, that also show up in my novella.

A wonderf13775397_10210072081779275_6033081796946729175_nul scene in the story takes place in the Jane Austen Centre in the Tea Room. Oh my, that was such a fun experience. We have high tea in a room decked out in elegant fashion – and in the center of the main wall of the room? A portrait of Colin Firth as Darcy (a realization the hero doesn’t quite understand, so the heroine has to explain t
he full significance of the portrait).

Tea time is scrumptious, with lots of options. To see the menu, check out this link.

I, of course, had the delectable selection of Tea with Mr. Darcy. Yummy!!! My very own pot of tea and some tasty tre13873161_10210072081859277_4483649918944225108_n-1ats in a regency-styled tea room in Bath, England? People, I was livin’ it UP!!

My 19 year old was with me too – but he’s NOT a tea drinker…or a…um…regency fan – but
there’d been a dragon show up at the tea room, he’d have had a blast! (both figuratively and literally, most likely)

Another important point of interest in Bath, which relates to my novella, is the entire reason Bath has its name. The Roman Baths. The actual Baths found (and now excavated) were the main reason people came to baththis town to benefits from the ancient spa – where the hot waters are still active. A museum and the remains of the Temple of Aquae Sulis are on display for history lovers. Interestingly enough, the first shrine built on the baths location was built by the Celts – but the current spa was built during the Roman occupation of Britain in 75 AD.  (you can learn more info here)

My hero and heroine have quite a lovely scene that takes place in this particular spot, so make sure to check it out in the compilation Love at First Laugh which released on March 6!!

To hear the first page of the novella, check out my video here

Enjoy!!!

Upcoming Writerly News

penned-in-time

2016 proved a pretty busy writing year for me.

In February, the second book in the Penned in Time series, The Thorn Keeatwistoffaith-500x750_v2finalper, hit the shelves. In April, my first contemporary romance novel, A Twist of Faith, made its debut to kick-off the Mitchell’s Crossroads series, and my historical romance series came to a end (close to home) with the release of The Thorn Healer in December.

What’s on the horizon for 2017?

Well, it looks like it’s going to be a contemporary romance year for me!

In March, my first novella arrives as a compilation with a lot of wonderful authors. It’s romantic (because….why would I write anything else 😉 AND comedic. The compilation is entitled Love at First Laugh and my Jane Austen inspired novella is called Second Impressions. (Bonus points if you know why that title has a double meaning).

15941082_10211748002556247_3298997609762240397_nIn April, my favorite book I’ve written (to date) releases. Just the Way You Are is the first book in A Pleasant Gap Romance series. This is a lighter and much more comedic-styled book that takes all the things I love most and pushes them together in one story 🙂 I’ll be posting more about it throughout the weeks leading up to release, which is April 6th!!! If you’re fond of England, the Blue Ridge Mountains, swoony heroes, hysterical heroines, adorable children, crazy families, a teeny bit of matchmaking, AND a historical mystery…well, this book is for you 🙂  Oh, and if you like romantic comedies like those with Meg Ryan, Sandra Bullock, or Amy Adams…well, that sweet-spot of pixie dust has been reserved for this kind of story! Funny, romantic, and sprinkled with just a little bit of magic.

COVER REVEAL is on Valentine’s Day!!

And the long-anticipated second book to the Mitchell’s Crossroads series arrives in November. Charming the Troublemaker takes readers right back into Mitchell’s Crossroads where an unlikely hero and a reluctant heroine must work together to save a tutoring clinic. Sparks fly all over the place with these two. He’s a flirt. She hates flirts.  Makes for some funny conflict and great banter.

Overwhelmed by Reader’s Responses!

tth-rt-reviewpromoIt’s true. The past two days I’ve been on the verge of tears from the absolutely BEAUTIFUL reviews that have come in about The Thorn Healer.

Why?

Well, because this story has been the hardest one to write to date (just as Julie Gwinn or Carrie Schmidt). Writing the hero wasn’t difficult, but ‘finding’ my heroine in the middle of all her pain (under deadline) nearly broke me! 🙂 Maybe that’s pretty appropriate since the book is about how God mends broken things.

More than that… this process and the readers’ responses have reminded me all the more that this story is God’s inspiration – not mine. Somehow, like in The Thorn Healer, God took my broken attempts and blubbering to piece together something beautiful.

I’m truly humbled.

the-thorn-healer-finalSo…to get back to those amazing readers?!? Here are a few quotes from the reviews that have come out so far. WOW!

“The Thorn Healer is my favorite book of the series, as it focuses on how God brings restoration to broken and hurting people. In the words of August Reinhold, “Nothing is too broken that it cannot be restored with the proper care.” – Angi Griffs

“The beauty of Pepper Basham’s writing is that you really live the transformation with her characters.  You feel their struggles, you share those moments when the light breaks through the cracks, and you experience the release when the truth finally breaks through and settles into their soul…You simply cannot read this series without having its characters take up residence in your heart. Do yourself a favour and read the whole series!” – Fiction Aficionado

“The heroine’s largest obstacle in her path to true love comes in the form of the great enemy of WWI— a German! The main pesky, problem with this German is—- nothing. He is perfect. August Reinhold, our hero, is so wonderful I just smile thinking about him. This man has an upbeat, loving, stable personality. He is a breath of fresh air in the middle of all the dark, moody, brooding heroes of some other Christian fiction novels I have read. August is witty in his own way, and loves to laugh. He spreads joy wherever he goes. I love that. We need more heroes like him in Christian fiction.” – Sylvia Miller

“Pepper Basham continues to write stories that sneak in and take up residence in my heart. The power of her words moves my soul. Make sure you grab your tissues before you crack the pages of this one!” – Rachel Dixon, Bookworm Mama

“It takes a truly God-touched author to so poignantly and truthfully deal with loss, the bitterness and anger that comes with it–and weave a story of redemption. Of God restoring to Jessica Ross what she thought she’d never have. Of August Reinhold walking out the love of Christ in every step of the story to Jessica. This story left me changed, and I am eternally grateful.” – Meghan Gorecki, NorthernBelleMeg

“The hope that permeates every single page makes this a beautiful story of grace and any bit of happy is hard-won, even from the wonderful side characters. (I personally really loved Cliff and Anna especially! 🙂 And per Ms. Basham’s usual, there are twists I was so not prepared for, yet her ability to draw me into her story so far that I struggle to come back to real life again is exceptional! I can but applaud her skills and only dream of writing so excellently myself because she goes far beyond the shallow romance here, there are depths of insight to be searched out if you’ll only begin with chapter one. Trust me, friends! It’s worth it. SO worth it. :)” Kara from Flowers of Quiet Happiness

“Ms. Basham is a wordsmith that has taken the genre of historical romance and turned into an art form to be savored for many years to come. Poignant and intense, this character driven story takes you into the heart of pain, deliverance, and healing.  There is humor, intrigue, and moments that had me on the brink of tears.  This book is very moving; staying with you long after the last page is turned and the back cover closed.” – Stacey from Beechtree Hollow

I plan to share more as I can, but I’m still marinating in such a sweet response to this release!! It can be read as a stand-alone or as part of the series!
