Sleep In Heavenly Peace

(It looks like my Dad is the one enjoying “Heavenly Peace” at the moment 😉

So, how many times have you had it happen? You are experiencing the BEST night’s sleep you’ve ever known since becoming a mother. Your pillow is the perfect consistency. Your blankets are situated just as you like them. Even your husband’s bass-like snoring isn’t annoying you.

And then……You hear the pitter patter of little feet as they scurry from their bed, down the hall, and wait by your head. Sometimes the pitter patter is accompanied with a moan or cry…my daughter seems to express herself with a little more volume than the boys.

In Lydia’s case, she’s had a bad dream or there is thunder outside. Her peaceful reverie of sleep has been interrupted by something frightening or uncertain and she cannot calm herself down. I pull her up into my bed and rest her head against my shoulder. In less that a minute, her shivers have subsided, her cries have ceased, and she is asleep.Amazing!

Somehow the terrible dreams within or the ferocious storm without couldn’t compete with the safety of my arms! What caused such a transformation? Trust! In her little heart, she believed that she could find safety within my arms.

How much more should we find peace within the arms of Christ, who gave his life to set us free from fear?Matthew 11: 28-30 is a call from our Heavenly Father to his kids.

He says, “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

Christ calls us to come to him….to find our refuge and comfort in him, from both the fearful thoughts within and the trials without. He is a hundred times more faithful than any earthly mother or father and he is trustworthy.

If we truly trust Him as our Loving Father, then we can abide by his promise in John 14:27.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.Do no let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

God’s peace for His kids is as certain as the warm arms you wrap around your frightened child. His rest is as beautiful as the complete trust on your child’s face as they fall back to sleep while in the safety of your embrace. He is faithful and trustworthy to hold you through any storm of life, brokeness of heart, doubt of spirit, or failure through sin.

May you feel the security of His love as you rest in His peace and are held safely in his everlasting arms.
