Christian Fiction Scavenger Hunt Stop #17

by | Oct 22, 2025 | Uncategorized | 195 comments

Welcome to the Christian Fiction Scavenger Hunt! If you’ve just discovered the hunt, be sure to start at Stop #1, and collect the clues through all the stops, in order, so you can enter to win one of our top 3 grand prizes!

• The hunt BEGINS on 10/23 at noon Mountain with Stop #1 at LisaTawnBergren.com.

• Hunt through our loop using Chrome or Firefox as your browser (not Explorer).

• There is NO RUSH to complete the hunt—you have all weekend (until Sunday, 10/26 at midnight Mountain)! So take your time, reading the unique posts along the way; our hope is that you discover new authors/new books and learn new things about them.

• Submit your entry for the grand prizes by collecting the CLUE on each author’s scavenger hunt post and submitting your answer in the Rafflecopter form at the final stop, back on Lisa’s site. Many authors are offering additional prizes along the way!

My name is Pepper Basham and I love to write romance “peppered” with grace, joy, and humor. I love writing books that feature my Appalachian heritage, but also explore Britain and other parts of the world. Writing in both contemporary and historical genres really makes the journey all the more challenging and fun, but one thing stays the same…the romance! I LOVE writing “kissing books” as my dad called them, so if that sounds interesting to you, check out my newest release, Sense & Suitability – an Austen-inspired romantic comedy.

Speaking of Regency…

Did you know there are some crazy and cool words used during the Regency era that we don’t use any longer? OR if we use them, they don’t mean the same thing they once did.

Here are a few I thought were interesting.

An Ace of Spades – a widow (I mean, I think that gives the title a little finesse, don’t you? She’s not a widow, she’s an ace of spades 😉

Bacon-faced– this one makes me laugh for two reasons. 1. I love bacon and 2. I have a round face (which is the meaning ;))

Bouncer – a obvious lie. Or bold-faced lie. For example, “Oh, that’s a bouncer if ever I heard one! No gentleman could have jumped a hedge that high without breaking his neck.”

Claptrap – nonsensical talk. “Mr. Carroway’s speech was all claptrap—so many fine words signifying nothing.”

Cucumberish – to be broke or in debt. I love this one! “The man is fairly cucumberish for all he spends on his wife” 😉

Make a Cake of Oneself- Embarrass ones self. My heroine, Emmeline Lockhart, makes a cake of herself by falling in the pond at the hero’s house 😉

Saucebox – a “saucy” or impertinent person. Lottie, in Sense and Suitability, is quite the saucebox…often.

Me, my mom, and my daughter at the Jane Austen Centre in Bath, UK

Spoony – a “fool” in love 😉 “He was quite spoony over her after a single dance.”

Dicked in the Knob – crazy, silly, out of his mind. Some examples that could come from my current WIP:

  • “If you think I’m letting you ride through town at midnight to fetch medicine, you must be dicked in the knob, Thomas Bridges.”

  • “Entirely possible, Miss Reeves. It appears to be the only sensible explanation for my behavior around you.”

Okay, so now I’m wildly curious. Do you have a favorite from the above words? I really like spoony, but I write romance so…

If you’re interested, you can order Sense & Suitability on Amazon, Baker Book House, Barnes and Noble, or at your local bookstore!

All you have to do is sign up to get my e- newsletter (top right of my home page, green box) or note that you’re already a subscriber. Additional points for those who follow me as an author on Goodreads or on Instagram! (USA only)

I’ve not heard bacon-faced before but am a fan of bacon-brained. This could relate to fat head, since our brains are comprised mostly of fat.

And I just re-subscribed to your newsletter; too excited at the thought of a physical book as prize (they’re the best!).
