The hunt BEGINS on 10/15 at noon MST with Stop #1 at LisaTawnBergren.com.
• Hunt through our loop using Chrome or Firefox as your browser (not Explorer).
There is NO RUSH to complete the hunt—you have all weekend (until Sunday, 10/18 at midnight MST)! So take your time, reading the unique posts along the way; our hope is that you discover new authors/new books and learn new things about them.
• Submit your entry for the grand prizes by collecting the CLUE on each author’s scavenger hunt post and submitting your answer in the Rafflecopter form at the final stop, back on Lisa’s site. Many authors are offering additional prizes along the way!

I’m Pepper Basham and I LOVE romance! I write historical and contemporary romance with humor, faith, and, usually, my native Blue Ridge Mountains. So, yep, I’m an Appalachian girl at heart and storytelling is a big part of my culture. You can learn more about me on this site at www.pepperdbasham.com OR connect with me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and/or Pinterest.

If you happen to like a good story – and one set in the Blue Ridge Mountains- my newest just came out this month. The Red Ribbon is a true crime historical romantic suspense novel that brings in some moonshinin’, gun slingin’, and a kiss that led to the Hillsville Courthouse Massacre of 1912.

AND…the hero in this story is likely one of your romantic betas, which is why I’m going to chat about beta heroes today!

In Defense of the Modern Romantic Beta Hero…

If you’ve read at least 10 romance stories, then there’s a good chance you’ve met an Alpha Romantic hero 8 out of 10 times, at LEAST. Alpha heroes are the popular types in most romance stories, regardless of genre. Sometimes, you can even tell from the cover of the book! If the novel involves werewolves, vampires, or high-class businessmen, there’s a 99.9% chance, that hero is an alpha. I’ll have a post coming up on modern romantic alpha heroes, but today, it’s all about those romantic betas.

What is a modern romantic beta hero then? I often think of the alpha as the hunky daydream and the beta as the guy you’d actually want your daughter to marry. That’s not to say beta heroes can’t be hunky or alphas are not marriageable.

Unfortunately, betas get a bad rap because—compared to the alpha—they can be misconstrued as weak. It’s just that their gentler approach to women, relationships, and life don’t stand out, initially, as much as the alpha’s personality does.

Here are a few romantic beta characteristics:

  • His superpower is his relational awareness and abilities, usually.
  • He may have a tough backstory, but he’s either learned to work through it or cope with it through humor or deference.
  • Quieter strength
  • Can be just as interesting as an alpha when he enters a room, but he’ll likely cover the attention with humor, a story, conversation, or attention shifting.
  • Competent in his world
  • He is more likely to attempt to persuade or convince than demand.
  • His actions are usually less forceful and more communicative, unless provoked.
  • He can be as protective as the best alpha, when feels like the people he loves are being threatened.
  • Instead of being physically aggressive or confrontational, he is more likely to work behind the scenes to get what he wants.
  • And though a beta may not have as pronounced a character arc as an alpha, because he’s human and flawed he still has great potential for growth.
  • He is more likely to use his brain/emotions to solve problems rather than brawn/power.
  • He usually has more emotional intelligence about himself and others, even though he can be a numbskull with the best of them when it comes to relationships too (again…human).
  • A beta has long term potential that involves more than just fights and heated nights of passion (though he is just as capable of having both of those as an alpha.)

The best betas have a little bit of alpha in them.

Of course, the very best heroes are likely a blend of alpha and beta. Not sure what to call them? Alta? Belpha? Or…just perfect? 🙂

Ultimately, when we write romantic heroes, the hero needs to fit his heroine AND the story. An alpha romantic hero will fit certain stories/heroines better than a beta and visa versa. It’s as important as the right girl for the glass slipper 🙂

Do you have any favorite romantic beta heroes you’ve read?

***ALSO, if you want to try out one of my books (with one of my FAVORITE beta heroes in it), my contemporary novella, Jane By the Book is FREE today on kindle!!!!***

Amy, I also love Alpha heroes. I was going to post a comment to this thread, but I realized it would end up being a book of its own; so I decided to just reply to your comment instead. I think in real life Alpha heroes are dying out so it’s always nice to find them in fiction at least.

The most recent beta hero I read was Ren Ichinose from the Strobe Edge series by Io Sakisaka. It was so refreshing to see because shojo manga has a rep for having alpha heroes but Ren was very conscientious and a guy with restraint can be really *attractive* … 😉

I don’t think I have ever thought of Alpha vs Beta characters in books before. I can’t think of any characters off the top of my head, but I feel like when it comes to real life I enjoy hanging out with Beta types more than Alpha. I think mainly because I don’t want to be the center of attention, and where the Alpha types are, I feel like the attention tends to follow.

Beta heroes have been favorites. The alpha’s are most appropriate in many cases, but I wouldn’t want to have to put up with one as a life partner. One Beta hero I liked recently was Mason Fanning in HER COWBOY TILL CHRISTMAS by Jill Kemerer. A bit of vulnerability makes them all the more appealing.

I love a great hero…either beta or alpha. If I HAD to choose, I’d say beta. Makes sense though because my husband is definitely a beta…way more a thinker, gentle by nature, calm and steady. My best friend. However, that man loves deeply. I am blessed to be the one he chose to spend his life with. As far as you hero go…Titus; who doesn’t love that guy? I’d even argue that Alex Murdock is a beta at heart trying to be an alpha which is what gets him into trouble.

Debra, that is so true. If the hero is well-written, then it doesn’t matter his ‘type’, does it?

I LOVE Betas, but the most important thing for me, in fiction, is to make sure the hero matches the story and the heroine – regardless of his ‘type’. But I tend to write more betas. LOL

Very interesting. I’ve recognized these Alpha heroes in books and other media, and it can be very misleading, especially for young, impressionable girls who picture their hero buff and charming. For guys, too, who feel the pressure to live up to that standard. I love beta heroes, because they can be so much more realistic and good role models.

    Reply
    • pepperbasham

Korin, I can see how that could be misleading, just like seeing “perfect” women can undermine young girls’ perspectives too. I’m glad God gives a wonderful variety of “heroes” in His Word, aren’t you? That way we can have a “standard” but also see how He has the ability to make heroes out of all sorts of people!
