Christ in the Carols – Hark! The Herald Angels Sing!

by | Dec 13, 2010 | Fiction Book Reviews | 0 comments

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is a beautiful song of praise – calling us to listen to the news from the angels. The words are attributed to 18th century hymnist, Charles Wesley. Set to the lively tune of a Felix Mendelssohn cantata, this carol sets the scene for a shocking celebration.

Here are a few notable excerpts from the song, before I list the words in their entirety.

“Peace on earth and mercy mild

God and sinners reconciled”  – WOW, what a revelation. The children fallen from grace can be reconciled to God because of the birth of God’s precious son.

Veiled in flesh the Godhead see

Hail the Incarnate Deity

Pleased as men with men to dwell

Jesus our Emmanuel” – This phrase should be shocking! God became MAN?!? Who could comprehend it? No other religion in all of the world would consider such a notion. God, the Creator,  wrapped in flesh and living among the creation?

But there was no other way. No other option to save the lost souls of man. We were so far ruined, it would take perfection to set us right. Christ’s kingly glory given to us.

No wonder the angels were singing. Their KING had come to earth.

We should celebrate with even more rejoicing than they ever did – because He came to save US!!!

Hark the herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled”
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
“Christ is born in Bethlehem”
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Christ by highest heav’n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin’s womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Hail the heav’n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris’n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”
