Swoony Saturdays – Josh Tyler

Welcome! Welcome! Swoony Saturdays are your opportunity to be introduced to a book hero who fits high quality hero characteristics. (okay, so he just makes us weak in the knees for all kinds of reasons, but you get the point)

The photos involved are chosen as the most representative of the heroes featured, so IF they look like someone you’ve seen before, that’s almost entirely accidental.

Where can we find this dreamboat?  Then There Was You by Kara Isaac (Bellbird Press, June 2017) You can read my review HERE.

Hugh is relaxing before bed. (Gretchen? Have we arrived yet? We've been a little preoccupied....)
Ok…Ok…I know this is not Josh Tyler…But it’s Hugh Jackman. And he is Australian and look at that smile!

Personality summary: Josh Tyler is a man whose past has brought gravity to her personality but depth to his faith. As a musician in a band that performs all over the world, he’s used to being in the limelight but has also learned, due to painful circumstances, to guard his privacy. He wears a smile more readily than a frown…unless the heroine, Paige, is involved, but don’t worry – her proclivity for being unintentionally ridiculous turns Josh’s frown around. With a desire to do what is right, a love for family, music, and Jesus, he oozes a confidence which is seen best in his compassion with others.

What makes us swoon?

Blue Mountains, australia.
Blue Mountains – Australia

AUSTRALIAN!! (Everyone agrees that this is the top swoony feature 😉)

He’s a musician (guitar)

He can sing

He loves his family.

Loves people

Kind.

Great smile (this is a very swoony one for me. Smiles!! Sigh)

He’s gentle when it’s needed most.

Seriously, this guy is pretty adorable. Funny, confident, flirty…AND he loves Jesus!!!!!!

The Center Bar in Bonita Springs has great drinks and a great atmosphere! thecenterbar.com/Kissing level of such swooniness: Okay, we don’t get a whole lot of kisses from Josh, but there’s a FANTASTICALLY notable one that happens in a certain ‘tunnel/hallway’. Unforgettable! Up there in the swoony charts. A solid 4.

Basic hero type: Josh can brood with the best of them but underneath is a very caring heart. I think brooding might not be his typical trait, so I’m placing him in the Wentworth (for grudge holding) with a dash of Knightly underneath. What do you think?

Swoony Saturdays – Charlie Lionheart

Welcome!

Charlie Lionheart

In May, my lovely assistant, Rachel Dixon, posted a Swoony Saturday about Charlie Lionheart, because she LOVED him and because…well…I hadn’t read Joanne Bischof’s book, The Lady and the Lionheart, yet.

Now, with the story fresh in my mind since I finished the book last weekend (much to Rachel Dixon and Carrie Schmidt’s ‘finally’ stares), I’m going to SWOON over Charlie afresh with you guys today 😊

Joanne’s novel has garnered RAVE reviews, awards, and excited fandom-status, including a line of women who often use the hashtag – #mycharlie (you know who you are).  Rt Reviews even named it “Inspirational Romance of 2016”.

From here on out, my comments will be in italics 😉

So….Let’s talk about this tamer of lions and soother of hearts.

Charlie Lionheart: Who? Charlie Lionheart

Where can we find this dreamboat? The Lady and the Lionheart by Joanne Bischof

Personality summary:

Raised amid the fame and mystique of the Big Top, Charlie Lionheart holds the audience in the palm of his hand. But while his act captivates thousands, it’s away from the spotlight where his true heart lies. Here he humbly cares for his pride of lions as if they were his brothers, a skill of bravery and strength that has prepared him for his most challenging feat yet—freeing an orphaned infant from the dark bondage of a sideshow. A trade so costly, it requires his life in exchange for hers, leaving him tarnished by the price of that choice. (From the back of the book.)

Charlie is a protector – as fierce as his brotherhood of lions. Yet, amidst the world of the demands, unpredictability, and sometimes horrors of circus life, he breathes a gentleness and uncertainty which is endearing. A bit quirky (in the most adorable of ways), first necessity and then curiosity draw him toward the heroine in a timid dance of two worlds drawing back the curtains on each other. As his protectiveness merges with a sweet love for Ella, a most exquisite and tender romance blooms to outshine any show on the Big Top

LATL 4 : What makes us swoon?

He TAMES LIONS (of course, this would be considered swoony. Seriously??? How many heroes do you know who tame lions??)

He’s a tender daddy
His sacrificial love/Self sacrifice

Strength (works with lions!)I’d add here – his reigned in strength. It’s one thing to be strong (which is swoony, but it’s even more beautiful to curb the power into fierce tenderness and loyalty. That adds a depth that is breathtaking.

Compassion
His bravery (Not just regarding the lions)
His love for those he cares about is not just something to admire, but to learn from.

Another aspect of Charlie that is wonderful is his ability to look beyond external and take a person at face value.

I love his innocence.

And he’s quirky!! Bring on the ADORKABLE!!!

Kissing level of such swooniness: Charlie is definitely a 5 on this scale. I was left in an incoherent puddle for DAYS after reading this book. Make sure you read close to the kitchen, you WILL need your freezer!

THIS IS A KISSING BOOK, if nothing else for ONE kiss alone. Great googley moogley!

The Lady and the LionheartBasic hero type: Charlie is a Darcy. His brooding disposition and assumptions made about the heroine make him out to be harsh and cold. But he is a softy underneath.

Agreed, an unlearned observer might see him as fierce (much like the lions he tames), but closer observation reveals a loyalty, strength of character, and gentleness to remove any doubt of the dedication and swooniness of his character.

Who? Will Preston

Where can we find this dreamboat?  The Engagement Plot by Krista Phillips (releasing Nov 2017)

Personality summary: Will is a good guy who’s made some pretty impulsive mistakes that’s turned his world upside down. He’s trusting and kind, but struggles with trying to live up to the expectations of others instead of always choosing what’s best. Though his heart is mostly in the right place, he’s driven to find identity in his career, which sometimes places him in the wrong place at the wrong time. He used to be a dedicated Christian, but a painful wound has left him struggling with his faith and God’s Sovereignty. Thankfully, God never loses hold of His own and He’s placed Will right in the perfect spot to eat a little humble pie, rediscover some perspective, and…maybe even find the love of his life.

What makes us swoon?

I’m a sucker for broken heroes – guys who really need to be rescued. Will is definitely one of those.

His intentions are usually in the right place, even if his follow-through isn’t the best.

He loves his parents. A lot. Family is a heartbeat for him. (which also comes out when he’s hanging out with the heroine’s father. SWEET)

He apologizes to coffee! (you’ll have to read the book to get this one. LOVED LOVED this scene) (Preorder link is below 😉

He looks fabulous in a suit or flannel. Clean-shaven or five-o’clock shadow

Beth Erin says “He rescues damsels from kitchen mayhem”

She also says, “He bakes a mean humble pie and eats it too.”

He has a tender heart and desires to protect the heroine from further hurt at all cost.

Did I mention he looks like Tom Cruise???

Kissing level of such swooniness: Will is a 4 level kisser. Passionate yet also moments of intense tenderness.

What does the author, Krista Phillips, say about her creation?

While it might be dumb and not swoony to others, I love how Will eggs Hanna on, and his ability to carry on banter. I love that he bought Hanna the ring she wanted, no questions asked. I love that he has real regrets and remorse for his actions. I love that even though he is far from God at the beginning, he still saw something precious in Hanna that attracted him to her.

About the Book

513Iia8V52L

Six months ago, William stole Hanna’s heart and shattered it in front of millions of people on a reality TV dating show. And now the big-wig CEO is back on Hanna’s home turf in Minnesota and wants her to forgive him? Fat chance of that. But life is swirling around faster than snow in a blizzard, and despite her objections, teaming up with William seems like the only option to rescue her reputation.

William has never regretted anything more than the day he gave that ill-fated interview for the reality show, The Price of Love. But while he can’t change the past, he’s determined to fix the future. He just needs to convince Hanna to forgive him—and pretend to be engaged with him. Simple, right?

When the media erupts with even worse accusations, teaming up and pretending to be engaged seems to be the only way to salvage their reputations. Despite the media frenzy that swirls around them, an attraction neither of them can fight off begins to surface. Could this love run deeper than a scandal, or will old wounds tear them apart once and for all?

Swoony Saturdays – Adrien Delaporte

Welcome!

Earlier this week I posted a review for one of my favorite books, Kissing Adrien (you can find my review HERE). Next we travelled to Paris with Book Journeys (travel with us HERE). And today, we are swooning over the hero…Adrien.

906105

Who? Adrien Delaporte

Where can we find this dreamboat? Kissing Adrien by Siri Mitchell (Harvest House, 2005)

Personality summary: Confidante, funny, compassionate, and flirty, Adrien Delaporte is the quintessential French good guy. Since Kissing Adrien is first person from Claire le Noyer’s point of view, we don’t get firsthand ideas of what Adrien is feeling, but boy, oh boy, Siri describes this gorgeous specimen of European manhood’s emotions so well as seen through Claire’s eyes.

Adrien has been Claire’s childhood friend – now 10 years after their last meeting, they’re brought together again in the City of Love and Light to settle the estate of a mysterious aunt of Claire’s. The mystery of this aunt continues to keep Adrien and Claire in close proximity, and despite Claire fighting tooth-and-nail against how Adrien tries to get Claire to think outside the box, eventually the truth of her being loved and beautiful transforms this insecure workaholic into someone much more like she was created to be. Love does that, you know 😊

Kissing Adrien.pngWhat makes us swoon?

Seriously, this guy is pretty adorable. Funny, confident, flirty…AND he loves Jesus!!!!!!

He’s clever

He’s sexy

He’s French

Author Dawn Crandall had this to say: “his mysteriousness, his intensity, his charm, and his amazing enigmatic draw. His tantalizing conversation. The man oozes sexiness in the most casual way.”

He sees all the beauty in the heroine and wants her to see it too.

black-and-white-1031639_1920

He knows the heroine and takes special care to show her he’s interested in her.

The man is intense and a wee bit stubborn in the most delightful of ways.

His BLUE eyes

Smells like lime

This is Adrien’s “official” description from the book: “The interesting thing about Adrien was the synergy of all his parts. He was tall and lanky. Lithe and energetic. He had dark hair, bright blue eyes, and a perpetual tan. A largish nose and nice white teeth. But what pulled it all together was his personality – part clown, part diplomat – and the strange desire he created in those he talked with to make him laugh.”

He apparently has very nice ears as well, because our heroine Claire says this: “They were very nice. And clean. You can’t say that about everyone’s ears.”

ohh-la-la-2270869_1920

Kissing level of such swooniness: Okay, Adrien’s all around swooniness ups this rating even though there’s just one daggone kiss in the ENTIRE BOOK because when he does kiss…well, he’s as intense in his focus of that kiss as he is in the rest of the story. It’s a definite 4…if she’d written further kisses, I feel certain they would have been 5s…or higher.

Basic hero type: I’m saying he’s a Knightley with swagger (maybe with the intensity of Darcy sprinkled in for an additional swoon-factor)…what do you say? He’s the heroine’s friend, but he holds her to the fire on several issues to draw her out of her complacency and unhealthy thinking patterns. . When he realizes his own feelings, he’s intense in his pursuit, but still respects her uncertainty enough to gently ‘find’ her…at her heart.

Who? Beast aka Dan Stevens

Where can we find this dreamboat? Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast released March 2017

Personality summary: Some people are experiential learners and for this prince, it’s going to take an enchantress’ curse, some faithful houseware, and a fearless commoner to transform him into hero material. Not all heroes are born. The prince’s future and personality were impacted by his mother’s death and his father’s cruelty, corrupting his heart into a loveless quest for self-indulgence. When the enchantress changes him into a beast, the only way to break the spell is for him to “learn to love and earn their love in return”, but not a lot of people brave a wolf-infested forest to a creepy, always-winter-never-Christmas castle in the middle of nowhere…except maybe a beautiful woman trying to save her father.

Through an interesting turn of events, Belle, the girl, takes her father’s place as the Beast’s prisoner, and with a little rescuing of each other, healthy arguing, a whole bunch of compassion, some singing flatware, a pretty substantial gift of books, a deeper understanding of their backstories, and the discovery of their mutual interests, this uncertain, brooding hero is rescued by true love.

Beth Erin says “Fur is manly and warm and cozy.”

He has a teachable heart, once he gets over his grumpiness

Tina Turpin said, “He is kind and compassionate.” Which is true once he sets his bitterness aside.

Emma Watson as Belle - From Beauty and the Beast New trailer

His insecurity is sweet

He likes to read

And he gives Belle a LIBRARY…WHAT can be swoonier than that?

He also gives her a trip to Paris, but that’s anticlimactic after the library gift.

He is quick to apologize when he realizes he’s wrong

Humility looks fabulous on him

Marisa Deshaies had this wonderful quote to add: I have something: The Beast/Prince Adam is swoony because he becomes who is meant to be as he falls in love with Belle. He is the embodiment someone who learns to love (and not just in the romantic sense, as he also loves his friends) and becomes the better for it because in loving he forgoes his own desires and gives to the other person what they need.

Did we already mention Dan Stevens?

Here is the video of Beast’s song:

Kissing level of such swooniness: In all honesty, it’s a kid-flick, so the kissing level barely made it to a 3. I’m certain if the camera hadn’t panned out so fast, we’d have gotten more of the 4 kind-of-kiss we see in the animated version.

Basic hero type: The consensus is that Beast is a combination of Darcy and Edward Ferrars. This melancholy is a brooder with a whole lot of uncertainty underneath that growl. When given the opportunity to show affection and love, he’ll shower it in extravagant ways from a tender heart, but his past keeps him second-guessing himself. Good friends, a steadfast heroine, and

Who? John Lawson

Where can we find this dreamboat? True to You by Becky Wade (released June 2017)

Personality summary: John Lawson…whew, such a strong name for a strong guy, yet beneath all those layers of man-muscle is a surprisingly sensitive and vulnerable guy. He thinks and feels deeply, and has a strong sense of doing what is right. There’s certainly a hint of broodiness about him, but once someone moves beyond the initial intimidation, they’ll find a good-hearted, loyal, and kind man with a subtle-yet-fabulous sense of humor. There’s a quiet confidence about him which draws the heroine toward him from day one. Oh yes, he’s a swoony hero, but more importantly, when his focus is trained on a goal, he’s all in…and he’s focused on Nora 😊 Whew…

Kissing level of such swooniness: Red Shirt is a #3 to #4 level kisser. His gentle yet powerful personality comes through in the way he shows his love for Morrow, even in his kiss. Their first kiss leaves me breathless at sheer beauty.

Basic hero type: Despite the heroine’s mistrust of the Shawnee, Red Shirt is consistent protection, presence, and honed passion slowly breach the walls of Morrow’s heart and relinquishes her heart to Red Shirt’s love. He is a quiet hero, a Colonel Brandon or Wentworth sort – Ah, those military men His devotion to his cause and his heart are compelling, so when Morrow becomes ‘his’, the same devotion draws her into an intense and powerful romance.

About Laura Frantz

Photo credit: Kristin N. Johnson Photography

I was born and raised in Kentucky, living first in Ashland, Mammoth Cave, Bowling Green, and then Lexington. But my heart has always been in Berea, Madison County, the place my family has resided since the 18th-century. I came to know Christ there at the age of 12, was baptized, and spent my childhood roaming through the woods and swimming in the rivers of my books.

My earliest memories are of the public library, standing in front of shelves filled with those little biographies of famous historical figures like Daniel Boone and George Washington and Sacajawea. I began scribbling stories at age 7 and thankfully never stopped. My passion then and now is history and all the wonders of past centuries.

I attended college at Denison University in Ohio and also in England, living in a manor/castle and studying the American Revolution from the British perspective. Shakespeare and 18th-century literature form the backbone of my English degree. Strangely enough, I only took one creative writing class.

It was never a desire of mine to be published. I simply love to write for the sheer joy of writing – and that was enough. But as Proverbs 16:9 says, “The heart of a man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

I hope my books bless you.

David Ross

Who?

Dr. David Ross

Where can we find this dreamboat?

The Thorn Keeper by Pepper Basham (released February, 2016)

Personality Summary

Dan Stevens may have been an ‘unruly’ child, but he still played Macbeth at 14.:
Pinterest

Looking for a focused, driven personality? You’ll find it in our hero for today. Dr. David Ross is devoted to his work in helping WWI soldiers recuperate and heal, and he’s not above allowing anyone to help him in his cause, even if that means stepping outside of social convention and befriending an unwed mother. David has a tremendous wealth of compassion but also a strict moral compass, so when Catherine’s reformed life begins to push at self-imposed safeguards he’s placed around his life, he has to reexamine his faith…and his heart. Once he makes the decision to love her, his faithful pursuit and gentle wooing, break down the barriers of self-deprecation and worthlessness Catherine continued to struggle with. David’s focus, as a surgeon, takes a whole new precision when he makes the decision to love her. His faithful pursuit and gentle wooing break down all of her excuses of being unworthy and unlovable. Oh, what a romance!!!

#tasteslikeChristmas  – Enough said, we can all go home now. As long as that includes reading The Thorn Keeper immediately….

His heart. His compassion. He is a doctor…. His capacity for love.

He doesn’t give his heart easily, but when he does choose to love, there’s no going back.

His tenderness towards Catherine. His ability to see past her “scars” to the woman she truly is.

He is undoubtedly one of Pepper Basham’s best characters, he is in all three books and his steady, calm demeanor is amazing. David’s conversation with Katherine about Jesus is one of my favorite book scenes ever.  It’s not an easy thing to make something so intensely personal and internal, flow externally onto a written page. But Pepper did it. And those letters! He is a hopeless romantic when paired with the right woman. – Rebecca Maney

Pinterest

On a kiss factor, David smolders. I needed a fan for the hallway scene. Peppermint, grins, refusing to be ruffled, his heart, compassion, wooing ability. Oh, and that dimple! As well as his pursuit of Catherine.

Swoony barely begins to describe him. You need a fan for his wrist-kisses alone. His strength, encouragement, and constant response of GRACE toward Catherine make him my favorite! Plus #tasteslikeChristmas & supply rooms & his fascination with Catherine’s hair.

(A huge thank you to the team for your collaboration!)

A Note from Rachel: For FUN…Check out this new song from Beauty & the Beast. Dan Stevens is quite swoon worthy as the Beast…and his VOICE! *sigh* I admit that I have had this soundtrack on repeat 24/7.

Knightley’s description fits David perfectly, but his determination, slight stubbornness, and passionate nature are a lot like Darcy. Plus there’s a meddlesome aunt! (Thanks to Courtney for this lovely description!)
