My God is so Big

My oldest child is a very deep thinker. He’s already smarter than me (which he knows and I really don’t want to ponder the implications of that too long :-). He’s also sweet, compassionate, and knows exactly which ‘buttons to push’ on his younger siblings which cause them to explode into a fit of rage or tears.

A little while ago, he was discussing school with me and began to talk about how big God is. His response reflected my own thoughts, but I’d never been able to explain it so clearly.

He said, “You know, we were talking about God in school and sometimes it makes me nervous. Like, when I think about God not having a beginning, I have to stop and think….4 + 4 = 8, just so I remember that’s something I CAN understand.”

It was amazing! Do you ever sit and marvel about God’s greatness? Do you ever have that one-second epiphany into a glimpse of His majesty? Sometimes I ‘feel’ it for a brief moment during worship or prayer time. It’s an awe….and makes me a little nervous.

Kind of like Aslan from the Chronicles of Narnia. The Pevensie children ask Mr. Beaver if Aslan is safe, and he replies, “Safe?…who said anything about safe. ‘Course he isn’t safe, but he’s good.”

Sometimes if I meditate on the greatness and awesomeness of God too long, my human brain starts ‘weirding out’ kind of like my son’s. God is so big, powerful, majestic, and awesome, that Moses could only look at a ‘part’ of God, lest he die. Whoa!

Romans 11:32-34 states, “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgements and his paths beyond chasing out! Who has known the mind of the Lord? Who has been his counselor?

He is bigger than our minds can conceive and although we find it ‘mind boggling’, we should also find a great deal of comfort in the thought. If we could always understand him…..If we could always explain him…..If we could always know his ways, then he wouldn’t be as great or awesome. If I’m trusting my eternity to Someone, I want him to be much bigger than me….big enough to create an eternity and hold my ‘happily ever after’ in His everlasting arms.

    Awesome.

And it fits right in with my Names/Characteristics of God Meme – even if you didn’t mean to. 🙂
