Mother’s Day & the Widow’s Mite

Happy Mother’s Day!

Being a mother is one of the greatest gifts God could give women – whether you are a biological, adopted, or spiritual mother. It’s an amazing blessing – a true opportunity to influence young lives for the glory of God.

Do we fail sometimes? Sure we do! It’s all a part of being human. We NEED Jesus. If we didn’t sin, or fall flat on our faces sometimes, then Christ wouldn’t have had to come in the first place.

So…

Today, something very sweet happened to me. Of course, my family fixed me breakfast. Then, a gift bag showed up with a gift card (woohooo!) and a picture of my beautiful crew. It was all very sweet and endearing.

But after that, when I went upstairs to make sure my boys were getting ready for church instead of lost in some game where dragons detroy leg0-star wars-pirate creatures, my 10 year old grabbed me in a hug.

He said, “Mom, I have a special gift for you for Mother’s Day.”

“Oh sweetie, you already gave me a gift when we were downstairs.”

“No,” he said. “I wanted to give you something from just me.” He proceeded to run to his dresser and pull out a little wad of dollar bills and coins. “I’ve saved my allowance for three weeks just for you.”

I’m crying all over again at the thought. I knew he wanted to buy some special Wii game he’d been saving for. I knew there were other things he could have done with that money, but in his had – all $8 and some odd cents of it- was a greater gift than $1,000. Why?

Because THIS was a heart-gift.

There’s nothing more precious than a child showing love and appreciation to their parent by expressing their love in actions. From the heart. No strings attached.

What a more beautiful thing can we do today for our Heavenyly Parent. Our Father.

He loves the heart-gifts we give him.

Our time, our songs of praise, our prayers, our joy in sharing with others about Him. All $8 and some odd cents. Because in all honesty, it’s not about the size of the gift.

It’s about the heart behind the gift.

Happy Mother’s Day!
