The Gospel According to Tinker Bell

Last night I watched the movie Tinker Bell with my youngest four kids. Cute movie with an interesting moral.

Of course, we all get different messages from movies. Books can be the same way.
To give you the gist of the movie, here’s a brief synopsis:

Tinker Bell, a new fairy in the realm, has been chosen to be a Tinker fairy. Tinker fairies have a job that doesn’t appear very glamorous and doesn’t allow them to travel to the Mainland. So Tinker Bell makes it a point to try and find another gift – to be a different type of fairy. Despite her gifts, she longs for someone else’s talents because they seem more important than hers.

As in every Disney movie, the ending is sweet. Tinker Bell realizes the importance of her uniqueness and ends up getting to go to the Mainland after all.

Now being a mom provides me with lots of opportunities to see my kids struggle with their gifts – or lack of gifts. One is great at math, the other isn’t. One can sing like a bird, but another has a hard time with it. One has a gift for saving money, the other spends as soon as the dollars hit his pocket.

In the end, some of the children feel like their particular talents aren’t as good as one of their siblings. They get angry, struggle with envy, and end up blaming each other.
They’ve forgotten something very important – just like Tinker Bell.
They were made, designed for a purpose.

God in all his beautiful glory – the King of the Universe, is also the father of our souls. Not only that, but he specifically designed each one of us. We are uniquely gifted for the calling He’s placed on our lives.

It doesn’t mean we cannot grow in other aspects of our lives, but there are special abilities you have that someone else doesn’t. Special insights and talents to perform the great and small things God’s given you to do in this world.

Sometimes you may not realize the greatness God’s designed in you. It might take, just like Tinker Bell, you being pushed to an extreme to ‘see’ how your special talents fit into God’s plan – but it’s there.

Pray.
What are some things you can do well? Things that you find joy in?
Many times, the activities we find pleasure in – and that others recognize as gifts in us, are skills God has given us. Let’s not lose sight of our ‘design’.

My favorite Psalm – 139- gives you a good picture of how you were intricately created with a plan in mind – by a loving Father. Branded with the fingerprints of God.

Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out;
you formed me in my mother’s womb.

I thank you, High God—you’re breathtaking!
Body and soul, I am marvelously made!

I worship in adoration—what a creation!
You know me inside and out,
you know every bone in my body;

You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit,
how I was sculpted from nothing into something.
Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth;
all the stages of my life were spread out before you,
The days of my life all prepared
before I’d even lived one day. “

Remember, God has a plan for you with the gifts He’s given you. You are His and you are wonderfully made with your specific talents to glorify Him.
