I Need a Hero – Clueless with Mary Connealy

And NO, I did not mean that Mary Connealy was anywhere close to clueless, though it does fit right in with her humor. Once Ruthy sees this, Mary, you know it can only lead to trouble 🙂

REad on and find out what all the fun is about.

Well, anyone who’s read my posts know I’m a big-time Mary Connealy fan. Her novels not only make the reader laugh outloud, but they send her onto a journey of page-turning excitement, sidesplitting male/female banter, and endearing romance. Anytime there’s a new one on the way, I’m marking the days and checking the bookstores.

So, when I heard her new book, Wildflower Bride, was coming out on May 1st, I knew I had to start keeping watch. (You do know that bookstores get some books before the release date. Woohoo, GO LIFEWAY!!)

To find out more about Wildflower Bride and Mary’s other books, check out her website at www.maryconnealy.com

Well, if you’ve read Mary’s books, then you are quite aware of her keen sense of humor – which will no doubt show up in her answers to the Hero questions for today.

Okay, Mary, what are your top three hero characteristics?

He needs to be strong on the outside and vulnerable inside.

Monosyllablic

Clueless about how a woman’s mind works, but not a jerk–that can be a thin line.

If I can get all those things in, I’m happy.

Monosyllabic? Okay, that might not work out well for an entire blog post. LOL. But I LOVE number three.

“Clueless about how a woman’s mind works”

(Btw, I really can’t make this one inspirational – God knows everything 🙂

Be honest, women love to watch a sweet guy blunder just a bit when he’s in love. We’ve talked about this a little bit before in some of the other posts, but a man in love is the most vulnerable (and, interestingly, the bravest) when he’s with the woman who owns his heart.

Funny moments like this? Where guys are clueless! Billy Crystal in When Harry Met Sally perhaps.

The entire premise of the movie– What Women Want, is based on male cluelessness.

Or Tim Allen in The Santa Claus 2

Fumbling Clark Kent in the presence of Lois Lane.

These types of moments, these guys, are endearing. Completely.

The kryptonite to the Superman.

Our strong, monosyllabic heroes with hearts. That’s why we love deep 3rd person POV with such characters. We get to the ‘heart’ of their insecure thoughts and know what their guesses were when they made a statement or completed an action. It’s wonderful, hilarious, makes us fall in love with them.

So, in celebration of this, I want to use an excerpt from one of Mary’s books. A short excerpt, but plenty of words to get the point across. This ‘clip’ is from Gingham Mountain.

Grant just needed her to shut up for a minute so he could tell her how much he appreciated her standing by him, and how sorry he was she had to face down a mob, and how annoying she was, and how pretty, and sweet – He turned her around and trapped her against the wall. –  “and let me apologize, I’ll – “

She turned her face up, her eyes flashing with fire and spirit, her cheeks flushed. “-then you’re the most insulting man I’ve ever –“

He couldn’t think of any other way to close her yapping mouth.

            He kissed her

            It worked

            She shut up.

He jumped back so fast he tripped over a desk. “I shouldn’t have done that.”

“You shouldn’t have done that.” Hannah covered her mouth with her hand, her eyes wide, watching him like he’d grown rattles and fangs and attacked her.

Grant shook his head and felt his brain rattle, so maybe he was close to growing the fangs, and he was very much afraid he might attack her again.

Hannah ran her tongue over her lips as if she wanted to wash the taste of him away. “That can’t ever happen again!”

“That can never happen again.” Grant couldn’t back farther because of the desk. That’s the only possible reason he went forward instead. And kissed her again.

Okay – I don’t think Mary would mind another teaser for her books. And if I hadn’t loaned out EVERY other Connealy Classic I own, I’d offer another excerpt to show you how endearingly vulnerable her guys are. Wonderful.

Hero Quote:

A wise woman puts a grain of sugar into everything she says to a man, and takes a grain of salt with everything he says to her.” – Helen Rowland

Inspirational Quote:

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.

24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.

Hi. I haven’t read that scene for a while. It’s one of my favorites.
I particularly love, just a few seconds after this, when she yells at him to let her go and he does, but first he has to help her unwind her arms from around his neck. 🙂
    These two are VERY conflicted.

I almost added that part to the scene, but decided if I was going to get into trouble for posting an excerpt, it’d be a little excerpt 😉 Should have gone for the whole thing!!
Just wait, Mary, I’m sure we’ll get all sorts of other examples when we get to read Wade’s cluelessness. From hints we’ve gotten so far…oh my – talk about ‘CONFLICTED”. LOL
