I Need A Hero – A top 20 list

by | Mar 18, 2010 | Fiction Book Reviews | 10 comments

Tomorrow I’ll have another author’s list of the top three character traits, but I found a cool list of the top 20 characters in movies and thought it went along quite nicely with the theme. I can also draw upon some of the characters in this list to talk about hero qualities.

Remember, this list is top 20 CHARACTERS, no necessarily heroes. AND It’s only ONE list. There were all sorts of different character lists and I’ll list another one next week.  This one was definitely completed by a more ‘movie’ friendly population 🙂 (List from Fandomania)

Let’s have the countdown, shall we?

20. Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly and Serenity

19. Frodo Baggains from Lord of the Rings (I’d move this one up to the top 10 along with Samwise Gamgee 😉

18. Homer Simpson (NOT!!!)

17. Frankenstien’s Monster – GREAT character, but not exactly hero quality. If you’ve never read Mary Shelley’s book, it’s certainly an ‘evocative’ read.

16.  Hamlet – but only if played by Mel Gibson 😉

15.  Han Solo (yep, Harrison Ford in about any form will do) 😉

14. Luke Skywalker – GREAT hero’s journey here – a ‘regular’ guy who is asked to take on an ‘impossible task

13. Captain James T. Kirk

12. James Bond

11. Dracula – (rivals with Edward Collen, I’d guess 😉

TOP TEN

10. Indiana Jones – YEP

9.  Mr. Spock

8.  Harry Potter

7.  Spiderman

6.  Darth Vader

5. Sherlock Holmes (definitely a fascinating character)

4.  Dr. Who – LOL!

3.  Buffy Summers – The Vampire Slayer – Really?  Definitely not in my top 50 even

2. Superman

1. Batman

Okay, okay – this is definitely a list from ‘the culture’. I want some of us writers to make a list now and I’ll post it too. Tell me. List five of your top fictional characters of all time. We can do MUCH better than this 🙂

NO KIDDING! Harry Potter?? COME ON! Okay, I’ll get off my soapbox. Never watched or read Harry Potter, but I do not care for the magic, dark stuff. No way! 😀

Favorite hero’s and where to find them (from some favorites on my book shelf):
Patrick in Daughters of Boston Series- but who am I kidding- ALL those men are great heros. 🙂
Gabe in Hidden Places by Lynn Austin
DJ in the Weddings by Bella Series by Janice Thompson
Wyatt Caradon in The Inheritance by Tamera Alexander
Lytham in A Constant Heart by Siri Mitchell

Can’t wait to see what everyone else comes up with. 🙂

      Ooh, Casey.
Julie’s characters are definitely up there in my favs list. We might need to make two lists. One literary and one movie favs. I have some different ones depending on the mode of hero worship 😉

      Literary wise?
Mr. Knightley – from Austen’s Emma
(Of course I like Mr. Darcy, but he’s not my favorite Austen hero)
Adrien from Siri Mitchell’s Kissing Adrien
Red from Mary Connealy’s Montana Rose
Collin from APMP – he’s still my favorite. Ooh, bad boy turned good. sigh
I do like Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre, although he’s such a tortured soul.
I think Francine Rivers does a fantastic job with Michael Hosea in Redeeming Love.
      Those are just a few.

I’ll list some of my cinematic favs later 🙂

Hhhhm, I love Mr. Darcy. Sigh.
Colin in Julie Lessman’s A Passion Most Pure. Yummy.
Rhett Butler is a great hero. Loves his woman with all her flaws and can stand up to her. 🙂
Just a few….I’m sure I have lots more. lol

Oh Sherrinda, so agree with you on the top two. Despite my LOVE for Julie, I’ve never been a deep fan of Rhett, though. Forgive me, Julie. 🙂 I did put Colin up there, right. And I love Patrick too 🙂

I’m head over heels for one of my heroes, but since he’s only in MY head right now, I can’t expect everyone to know him. Wes Harrison…sigh. Another British hunk. I put a scene about Wes and Eisley up at the end of the ‘kissing’ fest 🙂

Why is Mr. Darcy not on this list?! LOL!

Don’t laugh! I totally agree with #4! I love Dr. Who!

    XOXO~ Renee

      Renee,
Dr. Who is VERY cool! No doubt there. Not quite as debonair as an Austen hero, but his smarts are sexy 😉

I wavered between Collin and Patrick from APMP too. Was a heart beat from putting him down, but decided on Patrick instead. Looks I should have anyway. LOL!

I can’t believe I forgot to add four of my ALL TIME FAVORITE heroes – and all from Lord of hte Rings.
Gandalf – I’ve always loved him, even before the movie
Aragorn- who just got better in the movie 🙂
Samwise Gamgee – the essence of a true friend
Farramir – the book version is the best. He is a great hero.

Pepper, I must tell you about the most amazing hero ever! Have you ever read anything by the late Kathleen Woodiwiss? If you have not, you must get a copy of “SHANNA”. This is a book I read almost every year. Her writing is incredible, her characters three dimensional, and the love and passion between her hero and lady is absolutely deep and breathtaking. Which brings me to this, Ruark. He is the hero in this book, and he will capture your heart. He has all the characteristics of a true hero and plays them out in full force. Run! Do not stop until you get this book….Then let me know if you are as “taken” as me…..Cate
PS. My husband loves when I read this book because it puts me in a “romantic” mood.

Oh, I hope I’m not too late for this but, since we’re all a bunch of sickos here (and I don’t just mean mentally 😉 I’m taking time to catch up with your blog 🙂

This is hard to narrow down to 5 but…

    1. Wesley (Princess Bride)
    2. Colonel Brandon (Sense & Sensibility)
    3. Nick Charles (Thin Man series)
    4. The Saint (The books and particularly when played by George Sanders)
    5. Robin Hood

And I would have to agree with Dr. Who if we are referring to when Peter Davidson played the Dr. 😉
