I’m certain mothers have some built-in radar system that detects any child movement after 9pm. I don’t know how this phenomenon came to be, since I used to sleep through tornado-like conditions before I became a mom, but somehow I’ve traded my peaceful oblivion in for a pair of well-honed bloodhound ears.
One time I was awakened from my sleep by a slight shuffling/clicking sound in the room above me. It was such a quiet sound that I almost convinced myself it was my imagination or the results of a creaky house, but somehow that instinctive radar kept blinking in the back of my head.
I made my way, quietly, up the stairs and found my six year old sitting in the middle of the dark room building some Star Wars lego thing.
My presence startled him and after a moment he asked, “How did you know I was up? I was very quiet.”
I answered, “Mom’s just know.”
His eyes grew round with horror and the sudden realization that I might be serious, so he quickly put the legos away and crawled back into bed.
As I leaned down to tuck him in, he grinned. “Well, I guess it’s good you know, mom, because if I ever get lost, you’ll be able to find me.”
I think there is something incredibly awesome about the thought of someone always knowing where you are….it is frightening and comforting at the same time. At first, my son thought it was a little scary to have me ‘know’ when he was awake and where he was, but after some thought, he decided the idea wasn’t so bad.
David knew about this kind of feeling.
In Psalm 139 (one of my favorite Psalms by the way), he writes,
“O Lord, you search me and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
You perceive my thoughts from afar.
You decern my going out and my lying down;
You are familiar with all my ways……
Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens you are there.
If I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
If I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
“Wow! What beautiful lines of poetry and what a wonderful revelation for us.
David continues with the Psalm describing how well God knows him and…even his sin. He asks God to purge him from his sins and ‘lead me in the way everlasting.”
God does know us. He knows our strengths, weaknesses, desires, wounds….the things we want to hide from everyone else… He’s not sitting up in Heaven waiting to point his righteous finger at us and condemn us because of our many sins, because His Son, Jesus has paid the penalty for all of our unrighteousness. God knows, God sees, but God still loves us.
Romans 8:38-39 sums God’s unending love up.
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels or demons, neither the present nor the future or any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to seperate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
We are loved. We are known and there is nowhere we can ever go where His everpresent, everlasting love cannot find us. So…no matter how lost you may think you are…you’re never too lost for God’s all-knowing love to find you. He’s the ultimate GPS.
